Scale and tempo

I listened to this episode of Invisibilia on NPR called Two Heartbeats a Minute. The episode was about the scale and tempo issue of how humans cannot emotionally connect to problems if they are not within the spectrum of the scale and tempo of a human life and dimension.

When a problem is fast enough and close enough - a car crash, a punch in the face - you respond immediately. That's just how you're wired. But when it's too slow or far away, like climate change, it feels so abstract, it's hard to motivate. There are, after all, so many other more pressing concerns.
