Eskenazi’s boxes

I’m listening to Jason Eskenazi discuss his approach to photography on Paulie B’s YouTube series Walkie Talkie.

Eskenazi describes having several projects that unfold over many years. Within each project, photographs can be juxtaposed across different times and places. He begins with a title, creates a box for the project, and starts putting photographs into it. Eventually, he says, the images in the box come together as a book.

He also explains that the photographs in a project can suggest what to shoot next. As the work progresses, a direction begins to emerge, guiding him toward the next image.

I’m drawn to Eskenazi’s way of working and his philosophy, and I’d like to find a way to incorporate them into my own photography practice. I’m currently working on Flow, a personal software to manage my growing photo archive; maybe I should add a projects section that carries over some of his approach.
